The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) congratulates Dr Siphiwo Mahala and Dr Buntu Siwisa whose respective books were long listed for the prestigious Sunday Times Literary Awards (non-fiction category). The research and writing of the two books were undertaken as part of the JIAS African Biographies Project.
Mahala’s book titled ‘Can Themba: The Making and Breaking of the Intellectual Tsotsi’ is published by Wits Press (https://www.witspress.co.za/page/detail/Can-Themba/…), while Siwisa’s book, ‘Rugby, Resistance and Politics: How Dan Qeqe Helped Shape the History of Port Elizabeth’ is published by Jacana Media (https://jacana.co.za/…/rugby-resistance-and-politics…/).
Also longlisted for the Sunday Times Literary Awards (fiction) is Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu’s novel, ‘The Quality of Mercy (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.co.za/…/9781776380008). A previous winner of this prize, Ndlovu has been a Writing Fellow at JIAS and wrote part of this book while at JIAS.
