The shock result in Britain’s 2016 referendum on European Union membership triggered years of political turmoil across Britain and the Western world. On the political right, men like Nigel Farage and Donald Trump heralded it as the beginning of the end of the European Union, and the start of a worldwide revolution against ‘globalism’? On the left, the result was seen as an assault on liberal values, and the start of a movement against global integration. Three years on, Britain remains deeply divided, the future of the European Union remains in question, and growing trade wars raise the prospects that the turn against globalization is real, with possibly dangerous implications for the world economy. To help better understand the causes, consequences and likely course of action of this defining moment, JIAS will host a roundtable discussion with a panel of leading experts and journalists from Britain, Europe and South Africa.
