Prof Zakes Mda is a prolific author of novels, plays, poems and articles for academic journals and newspapers, whose writing has been translated into twenty languages. Among others, he won the Sunday Times Literary Prize for his novels The Heart of Redness and Little Suns in 2001 and 2017 respectively, and in 2015 he won the UJ Prize for South African Writing for his novel, Rachel’s Blue. His creative work includes painting, theatre and film productions. He is the recipient of the Presidential Order of Ikhamanga in Silver. He is based in Athens, Ohio, where he spends his time writing and painting. He holds a BFA (Painting and History of Art), an MFA (Theatre) and an MA (Telecommunications) from Ohio University, and a PhD from the University of Cape Town.
