On 12 May 2021, the eminent South African poet, Mazisi Kunene would have turned 91.
Born in Durban in 1930, Kunene is an exemplary literary ancestor on various issues pertaining to the location of indigenous African languages in modern African literature and various colonial strangleholds in the realms of philosophy, history, language etc. This event is a tribute to Kunene, the Zulu poet, freedom fighter, friend, father and husband. Scholars and close associates will discuss Kunene’s epic poetic imagination on themes such as home and exile, Zulu cosmology, history and the relevance of his Pan African poetic imagination to our times.
