The first part of the presentation will look at the emergence of circus training centres in early twentieth century Malabar. This was a radical recasting of the body in a place where caste system imposed cruel restrictions of access to other bodies not just in touch but even visibility and hearing. The second part shall explore the formation of circus schools across East African countries by the end of the twentieth century, founded on the idea of ‘social circus’ and promoted by nongovernmental organizations, mostly based in Global North.
